Warnham LNR
A very misty and autumnal morning greeted us this morning with another frost and no chance of seeing much by way of visible migration as we couldn't even see the millpond! The only bird seen was a Kingfisher in front of the Tern Hide as seen in the photo.
Eventually the warm autumn sun burnt off the mist and immediately exposed lots of overhead migration with Woodpigeon, Stock Dove, Redwing, Fieldfare, Starling, Chaffinch and Goldfinch all moving over in a westerly or south-westerly direction.
The warm sunshine brought the raptors out in force with Red Kite, Common Buzzard and Sparrowhawk all putting appearances in. It was a quiet day on the ringing front but always nice to catch a few Lesser Redpoll.
Totals from the day are below:

A lovely later morning visit to the Farm to check the animals was just in time to get the best of the days weather. The early morning murk had just been burnt off and it was a gorgeous walk.
There were plenty of birds around making the most of the sunny conditions. There was a steady stream of Woodpigeon moving over the Farm in a south-westerly direction including a couple of decent flocks of over 40 birds.
There was a Meadow Pipit on the wires by Tip Field and bright pink male Bullfinch in the corner of Parlour Mead Field. Also of note was a flock of 23 Redwing in White Gate Lag.

Volunteer Traning Day - Wildflower Identification with Dominic Price
Middle Heath Enclosure - Owlbeech Woods |
A group of 17 all met at Owlbeech Woods bright-eyed and bushy-tailed ready for an exciting morning exploring the heathland restoration project and learning how the heath is developing as it becomes more effectively managed. Some of the first species we looked at were Pill Sedge and Green-ribbed Sedge both of which were growing on the recently scraped areas and were good indicators of this dry area of heathland. We then moved into one of the vehicle tracks which has a nice open sword with lots of bare sandy soil. This gave us the chance to look at some lovely heathland species such as Heath Milkwort, Tormentil and Heath Bedstraw. We also looked at lots of different grasses and learnt some field tips for doing some of them vegetatively such as Yorkshire Fog below which has a 'stripy pajama' look about it on the stems. Hopefully one which all of the group will remember!
