Warnham LNR - Round-up

Brambling - J. Glossop
The colder weather over the weekend has seen an upturn in the number of birds using the feeding station in front of the Woodpecker Hide. Numbers of Siskin, Lesser Redpoll and Chaffinch have all started to build and I was hoping to find a Brambling over the weekend. No luck then but on Tuesday morning I heard what I thought was a Brambling in the Oak to the left of the feeding station and sure enough after a couple of minutes a female dropped into the group of Chaffinches and Reed Bunting which were feeding on the millet.
Millpond in flood
Meanwhile the colossal amount of rain we have had over the past month has once again caused the Millpond to go into flood mode. The photo above shows the overflow relief channel being used which used to happen once in a blue moon but is now a regular occurrence. At the moment the works which have taken place in the Wet Meadow at the northern end of the Reserve are taking most of the water so the hides are not yet flooded but I have a feeling it is only a matter of time.
