The Incredible Fishing Crow!

I hope the title of this blog post got your attention as it should have for any budding naturalist! Whilst sitting in the Heron Hide with wildlife recorder Kevin Attree and wildlife photographer Michael Vickers a Carrion Crow truly amazed us all. It first flew low over the water as if it was going land in the middle of the millpond which drew all of our attention, it then seemed to hover a little perhaps a foot above the surface of the water before plunge diving head first into the water.

It very quickly emerged with a 6" Roach. This was absolutely incredible and we could genuinely not believe what we had just seen. The story got even more intriguing however when we noticed that the fish it had caught was actually alive! The fish was soon put out of its misery and the Roach was swiftly tucked into. Nosey friends of the Crow however soon noticed their companions catch and he flew off with the fish lunch in tow to the Millpond Plantation.

I have seen Tawny Owl's catch small fish in the margins by moonlight but never have I seen something so astonishing as this clever Carrion Crow. The corvid family are renowned for learning skills and being very observant. Maybe this chap had been watching the Herons or Kingfishers around the lake. My thanks go to Michael for managing to get a picture of the master fisherman with his impressive catch and to Kevin for witnessing this amazing piece of drama unfold! Michael also managed to get this stunning picture of a Kingfisher (below) from the same hide.

    Like a smaller edition of the American Crow, but with a more nasal voice, and typically found near water, the Fish Crow is very common in parts of the southeast. http://topspinningreels.com/

    It's imperative to wear an orange reflective vest during deer hunting season so that you will not be mistaken for big game. Using a turkey call is a good way to let other hunters know you're in the area too. Find this

    The wildlife photographer Michael Vickers is an outstanding photographer without fail. I love his photography. I have visited at the Best Fishing Show where he was doing photography.
