MEGA - ROSEATE TERN - Warnham LNR

Roseate Tern - Warnham LNR

After finishing off the re-flooding of the new scrape in front of Tern Hide myself and Stuart decided to see how it was looking as the water level was rising up due to the day's rainfall. We walked into the hide at 5.25pm and sat down to admire our work!

Neither of us had our binoculars but thought we would have our cup of tea in the hide. A tern then landed on the goal posts and I didn't blink as the two pairs of Common Terns had been very active today. When the bird landed however I thought it looked particularly long tailed but didn't think any more of it. Then when perched the bird also seemed very short legged...Uh-oh...alarm bells started ringing and I shouted to Stu that's a Roseate Tern and ran off for my bins and camera!

Soon enough I was back...I chucked my bins at Stuart and grabbed Tom who was in the office! After a few phonecalls and texts to alert people to the bird I set about getting a few pictures. It was not long before a small crowd had gathered to see this 1st for Warnham LNR.

Roseate Tern is a scarce bird nationally in Britain with just a handful of breeding sites. It is famed for its pelagic habits and this is an incredible inland record. I am just glad I went out to admire the wardens hard work ;-)
