Common Tern |
It has a been a very busy week at the reserve with lots of comings and goings. Above is a Common Tern which has arrived bearing a metal BTO ring. Luckily it decided to perch in front of the aptly named Tern Hide and I was able to read it's ring. The number was SR49539 which I believe is a bird that was born at Warnham in years past but I will confirm this soon.
Elsewhere a family of Tufted Duck's finally appeared...! 6 Beautiful little black fluff-balls and a very proud looking mother. This is the first time I have ever seen Tufted Ducklings on the reserve and is a fantastic record. Lets hope Mrs Tufted Duck can raise them successfully. The brood of six Mallard ducklings which are growing by the day have decided to take it in turn to fall down the sluice by the Visitors Centre! Sadly a couple got taken by Pike in the splash pool before we could rescue them. We did however managed to collect the rest and put them back safely on the millpond with mum. Here is one of the lucky ones.

The moth numbers have also really started to pick up and on a quick jaunt around the Mill Meadow after the Friends meeting I managed to count 23 Silver Y whizzing around and mainly nectaring on Common Ragwort and Knapweed.
