Warnham LNR - Round up

December Moth - Warnham LNR
Whilst the weather has finally been getting cooler this has not stopped us trying to catch a few of the winter moth species. We have had a little success in the shape of several Sprawler's (see previous posts) and last night we caught two of these stunning December Moths.

On the bird front things are finally starting to become 'normal' for us at this time of year. Several Lesser Redpoll's have started to appear and the numbers are very slowly building and there have been a couple of Siskin's mixed in with the Chaffinch flock which now totals around sixty birds. On the waterfowl front numbers are still very low. A high count of Mallard of 91 was a good start to the week as well as an arrival of three Pochard. At the weekend there were also three Gadwall on the millpond which JC managed to find. Early morning and late evening has also produced several squealing Water Rails but only a single bird has so far been seen out of the reedbeds.

Hebridean Sheep - Warnham LNR
Many of our regular visitors will be pleased to see the return of half of our Hebridean Sheep flock. The eight gentlemen will be helping us to graze the Mill Meadow and also tread in the seed of the wildflowers from the autumn. They will be on Mill Meadow until at least February depending on ground conditions and how hungry they are!
