Tundra Bean Goose - Warnham LNR |
Whilst leading a guided walk around the Reserve this morning I was alerted by a small grey goose flying around with c.20 Greylag Geese. Sadly they headed up the millpond before I could get anything on the goose at all. I presumed it could have been the Pink-footed Goose which had been kicking around lately just over the border in Surrey. To my complete surprise when we got to the 1st boardwalk the geese flock must have banked and were happily grazing on the golf course. After a quick scan, the second bird I came to was a stonking TUNDRA BEAN GOOSE!!! Absolutely mental!
After showing the group the bird and explaining why is was different to the accompanying Greylags I got on the phone and managed to get a few locals to come and see this mega rarity for Warnham LNR. Luckily the bird stayed all day and seemed to be relatively settled until it flew SW with the other Greylag's to roost late evening. Finger's crossed it will be present tomorrow for more people to come and enjoy. It just goes to show...it is always worth checking your local geese flocks during the winter for that possible rarity!
