Warnham LNR - Frozen Bonus

Sunrise at Warnham LNR
Frosty mornings are always my favorite and this morning was no different. They can transform even the most boring of vegetation into a stunning view. This photo was taken on my phone looking east from the Dipping Ponds towards the Millpond.

These pleasant cold snaps also make for interesting days at inland water sources such as Warnham. At first light this morning Stuart re-found the female Goosander which had been noted by one visitor the previous evening. (pic to follow) and most of the lake was frozen until midday making fishing difficult for the Egrets and Heron's so they strayed unusually close to the Tern Hide. The photo above was taken with my phone through my telescope as were the two following gull pictures.

Black-headed Gull - Warnham LNR
The frozen millpond also gives us the chance to look for colour-ringed gulls as you can see their entire leg. This morning there were only two gulls bearing colour-rings. The above Black-headed Gull was ringed at either Rainham or Pitsea Landfill site as was the juvenile Herring Gull below. Hopefully we will get a few foreign birds using Warnham as a winter refuge this year.
