Warnham LNR - Batty Night Out

This evening saw the first of two 'Batty Nights Out' events. The first was held at the visitors centre at Warnham. Local bat hospital owner Jenny Clark brought a total of nine different bat species along including the stunning Natterer's Bat below:

Natterer's Bat
Just under forty people young and old enjoyed the fantastic evening entertainment as we all learnt the finer points of bat identification and the difference between gleaning and hawking bats.

We also had a unique opportunity to see one of Britain's rarest bats called the Nathusius' Pipistrelle. Jenny explained that the bat is a migratory spices and has only bred in Britain since the early 1990's.

Brown Long-eared Bat
The group also had the chance to see one of Britain's most appealing bat species. The Brown Long-eared Bat immediately draws attention due to its incredibly long ears and Jenny told the group that they are essential for picking the up noise of moth wings beating thus allowing it to hunt them effectively.
After Jenny had finished the talk Ryan an I took the group out onto the Reserve and we had fantastic views of 30+ Daubenton's Bats hunting over the Millpond as well as a few Soprano Pipistelles feeding over the Orchard. A brilliant night had by all and plenty of information to take on board!
If you are interested in coming along to the next Batty Night Out it is being held at Southwater Country Park on Wednesday 17th September. The prices are £8.00 Adults/£4.00 U16s which includes a hot drink and biscuits on arrival. To book your place call the booking line on: 01403 215263
