Warnham LNR - Heronry Survey

Good sign - Whitewash!
Many of you will know if you check this blog or have visited the reserve that we have a large Heronry on the side of the millpond at Warnham. Today it was time to go round and survey how successful they have been this breeding season. We knew there were some nests with well-grown chicks in and we also new thanks to our Heron Nest Cam that there were some nest which were still incubating.

As Kev, Stuart and I walked into the heronry it was immediately obvious that there were plenty of young herons already hatched and feeding well. The above picture shows the affectionately named 'whitewash' which is found beneath the tree's and immediately draws you attention to a nest tree!

Hatched egg
Once you have located a nest tree it is then a case of counting the egg shells to estimate how many young have hatched. In total we found 19 active nests with 16 definitely with young herons in! We found 38 eggs which had successfully hatched too so it should be a bumper year at the reserve!

While on a nesting theme whilst pricking out some of the native flower seedlings I managed to find a Robin's nest by complete accident! She was sitting on top of a stack of seedtrays brooding her four chicks!
