Painted Lady |
Over the past week the number of butterflies and moths on the wing has really picked up. With the warm weather and gently southerly winds it has been no surprise to see Clouded Yellow, Painted Lady and hundreds of Silver Y's around the meadows and bug garden.

Pyrausta aurata |
Also around at the minute are several of the above moth (Pyrausta aurata). These can be seen visiting the herbs in garden which is why they get there common name which is the Mint Moth. They are quite a small moth with a wingspan of just 25mm.

White Ermine - Caterpillar |
Lastly it is a very good time to look out for caterpillars. There are many species around at the moment and most of them are great fun for children to rear through to adults. Ones to look out for at the moment in particular are the caterpillars of the White Ermine moth, this feeds primarily on Common Stinging Nettle and is all dark with a yellowish line running from head to tail. Keep your eyes peeled on the nettle patch in your garden!
