Smooth Newt |
Most of the time flooding at the reserve is a sad time and today was no different with a few more Coot nests washing away as well as the GC Grebe's latest attempt. We also had to sit and watch the water level rise to even wash out Reed Warbler and Reed Bunting nests. Not good.
On the bright side the dark, wet conditions makes the Smooth Newts in the smaller ponds more active and with a careful approach you can often see them on the rocky edges of the ponds. (See photo above).
The cows were finally turned out from there wintering grounds onto the Wet Meadow and have now had to retreat to the woods as there is 3ft of flood water back on the meadow. As you can see it was a pretty wet look this morning!
